Jay Roberts is Provost and Dean of the Faculty at Warren Wilson College in Asheville, North Carolina. Previously, he spent twenty years at Earlham College in Indiana as a Professor of Education and serving for seven years as the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs. Jay is a Fellow with the American Council on Education and served for four years as a Teagle Teaching Fellow with the Great Lakes College Association. He currently serves on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Experiential Education and the Board of the North Carolina Outward Bound School.
Jay’s research and scholarship focus on engaged pedagogy, experiential learning, and place-based learning. He is the author of three books: Risky Teaching: Embracing the power of uncertainty in higher education (2021); Experiential Education in the College Context: What it is, how it works, and why it matters (2016); and, Beyond Learning by Doing: Theoretical currents in experiential education (2011), all published by Routledge Press.
Jay gives talks and workshops on engaged pedagogy and experiential learning at schools, colleges, and universities nationally and internationally including recent engagements with Boise State University, Northeastern University, and the University of North Carolina-Greensboro.
Jay received his B.A. in Anthropology from Lawrence University, an M.Ed. from the University of Virginia, and a Ph.D. in Education from Miami University.

Karlyn Crowley is Provost of Ohio Wesleyan University, a liberal arts college featured in “Colleges That Change Lives. Ranked in the top 100 national liberal arts colleges, OWU is known as one of the “Top Schools on Social Mobility.” Karlyn oversees Academic Affairs including the signature integrated experience, the OWU Connection, and emphasizes creativity, entrepreneurship, and inclusive excellence to optimize the liberal arts in the midst of challenging higher education headwinds.
Karlyn received her B.A. from Earlham College and her PhD from the University of Virginia. She is published in academic and popular publications, including Inside Higher Ed. Previously, Karlyn was Professor of English and Gender Studies at St. Norbert College for 18 years where she held roles such as Founding Director of the Cassandra Voss Center, an endowed intersectional identity Center, among other leadership roles in Academic Affairs, including Assistant Provost.
She has been heavily involved with HERS Women’s Higher Education Executive Leadership Institute, which she attended in 2017, and has led workshops and mentored women faculty. Karlyn loves roller coasters, thrifting, liberal arts colleges, soup, and doing puzzles with their 14-year-old when their three cats don’t ruin the puzzle. She is always looking for new hobbies so if you have a suggestion, let her know!
Vice President of People, Culture, and Equity
Holyoke Community College
A distinguished leader in the fields of practical theology and diversity, equity, and inclusion, Dr. Marlowe V.N. Washington is a trailblazer in the realm of fostering inclusive environments where his ministry and academic acumens reflect a diverse range of causes and strategies creating justice and equality for all people. In his dual capacity as the Vice President of People, Culture, and Equity at Holyoke Community College in Holyoke, Massachusetts and Senior Minister at Agape Fellowship United Methodist Church in Rochester, N.Y., Dr. Washington has dedicated his career to fostering inclusive environments where everyone can thrive.
Dr. Washington is a first-generation graduate, having earned his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from St. Francis College in Brooklyn, NY and a Master of Divinity from New York Theological Seminary in Manhattan, NY. He furthered his education at Princeton Theological Seminary in Princeton, NJ, where he deepened his commitment to social justice and theological studies. But it was in Rochester, NY where Dr. Washington received his Doctor of Ministry from Northeastern Seminary and a few years later, his Doctor of Education in Executive Leadership with a concentration in diversity and inclusion in higher education administration.
He brings a wealth of experience from his previous role as the inaugural senior diversity officer at St. John Fisher University in Rochester, NY where he oversaw and constructed the university’s DEI initiatives. His work was so profound that the University and its Student Government Association named an award in his honor to a deserving senior each year that began in 2024.
In his current role as the inaugural Vice President of People, Culture, and Equity at Holyoke Community College in Holyoke, MA, Dr. Washington oversees the Human Resources, Title IX, Affirmative Action, DEI, and Campus Police departments, among other auxiliary services. His commitment to higher education as a great equalizer and his passion for building sustained relationships have been key to his approach to fostering an inclusive campus environment. His personal journey and dedication to social justice have made him a well sought out speaker and respected leader in the field of social equity and inclusion.
